The Information Technology Law Blog and Podcast by Professor Michael Scott

They’re Everywhere!

Search engines are good and getting better every day. I was made aware of that fact while preparing the last blog entry on the Viacom Takedown Notices. After preparing and posting the entry I decided that I should add a couple of links to it and repost it. So I went to Google to search for articles on Viacom’s actions. When I did the search, the first entry on the search results was MY blog entry — which I had posted less than a minute earlier! That’s what I call fast spidering!

The moral of the story is that you need to be careful what you post online. Even if you decide almost immediately to take it down or modify it, it is becoming increasingly likely that the original posting has already been indexed somewhere (and perhaps archived as well).
